Year 1
28th March 2025
Dear Parents/Carers,
We hope your child is looking forward to the Year 1 Disco next Wednesday! The children have certainly been getting more excited about it as the week has gone on. If your child would like to attend but hasn’t yet gotten their ticket, they are still available to buy at the school office.
Our Celebration Assembly
Our Stars of the Week are: Zara in St Bernadette Class and Winnette in St Therese Class.
Our awards for St Mary’s Way go to: Hemkrish in St Bernadette Class and Kristiano in St Therese Class
Next week the children will be reflecting on their Lenten Promise and have they managed to keep it. We will also be completing some Easter activities during the week.Home learning: Ask you child about their Lenten Promise. Can they talk about how they have kept it? |
Next week we will be comparing and measuring the capacity of objects using language such as ‘full’, ‘empty’ and ‘equal’. Home Learning: Ask your child to find objects around their home that can hold liquids such as jugs, cups, bottles and bowls. Can they explore how much they can hold? Which objects hold more or less? |
English
Next week the children will be continuing to learn about the story ‘Dear Earth’. They will write descriptions of animals using a riddle.
Home Learning: What is your child’s favourite thing about the Earth? What does it look like? Can they draw it and describe it? Why is it their favourite?
Here is a link to the story for you to enjoy with your child before you talk about the Earth: |
Phonics
Next week the children will revisit previous sounds in order to consolidate their knowledge of their Phase 5 sounds. We will be continuing to practise reading alien words in preparation for the phonics screening check in June. Some of the children are continuing to focus on the gaps in their phonic knowledge in order to develop their reading and writing skills appropriately. They will be practising how to blend sounds that they know in order to read familiar and unfamiliar words.
Please ensure you are reading daily with your child at home, this is very important and can have a huge impact on the development of your child’s reading. The reading books are matched to the children’s current phonic knowledge and this allows them to apply the sounds that they are learning to their independent reading.
Home Learning: Please look at the video below. This is a guide from Little Wandle that shows you how the children should be pronouncing the sounds they have been taught. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTe5_Em0BHQ |
