Dear Parents / Carers,
This week the children have been writing postcards to Paddington Bear telling him a little bit about themselves and also asking him a question to find out what he likes and where is comes from. They are waiting excitedly for a reply in the coming weeks! We have also completed our learning about Belonging and spent some time reflecting on what we would like to hold on to from our Belonging topic.
Here’s a look at what we will be learning about next week.
Our Celebration Assembly
Our Stars of the Week are: Annlyn in St Bernadette Class and Priya in St Therese Class.
Our awards for St Mary’s Way go to: Richard in St Bernadette Class and Ernestina in St Therese Class
Religious Education Next week we will be spending some time thinking about Remembrance and will be saying prayers for people who have suffered because of war. Later in the week we will begin our new topic which is our week of learning on another faith. The new faith is Judaism. Home learning: Talk to your child about how we remember people who are no longer here, what prayers can we say for them and who can we ask to look after them now. |
Maths Next week, we will continue to learn about subtraction. The children will be exploring the idea of how many left, when taking another amount away. They will also be building fact families for numbers to 10.
Home learning: Choose a number within 10 and help your child write out the fact family for that number e.g. 4 0+4=4, 1+3=4, 2+2=4, 4-0=4, 4-1=3, 4-2=2, 4-3=1, 4-4=0 |
English
In our English learning, the children will start to plan their own Paddington adventure story! Together in small groups they will share and gathering ideas about where Paddington might go and what problems he may encounter. They will also think about how they can have a happy ending in their story. Towards the end of the week they will begin to write out the first part of their Paddington adventure story. Home Learning: Ask your child what their favourite Paddington story is so far, from the ones they have heard in school. What kind of tricky situations does Paddington get himself into? How can he solve these and have a happy ending? Maybe the children could pretend to be Paddington and act out one of the stories they have heard.

Phonics
Next week the children will continue to be introduced to their new Phase 5 sounds. We will carry on recapping previously learnt sounds and the new Phase 5 ones are introduced each day. Look out for the videos on Seesaw!
Some of the children will be focussing on the gaps in their phonic knowledge in order to develop their reading and writing skills appropriately. They will be practising how to blend sounds that they know in order to read familiar and unfamiliar words.
Please ensure you are reading daily with your child at home, this is very important and can have a huge impact on the development of your child’s reading. The reading books are matched to the children’s current phonic knowledge and this allows them to apply the sounds that they are learning to their independent reading.
Home Learning: Please look at the video below. This is a guide from Little Wandle that shows you how the children should be pronouncing the sounds they have been taught. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTe5_Em0BHQ
Topmarks is a great website that has lots of fun games for children to play. Try their phonics activities here: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/english-games/5-7-years/letters-and-sounds |
Reminders As the weather starts to become cooler, please send your child into school with labelled appropriate cool clothing e.g. hats, scarves, jumpers, coats, gloves etc. It is very important that your children’s clothes are named as young children often forget where they leave things once they are removed, having clothing named makes it much easier to return your children’s items to them! Swimming and P.E. days for this half-term: St Bernadette: Swimming on Thursdays St Therese: P.E. on Thursdays Many thanks from the Year 1 Team |
